Snowbird Guide: RV-Friendly Stops Around El Paso & Las Cruces

Sunny days, mild winters, and plenty of open road make the El Paso and Las Cruces area a natural stop for snowbirds on I-10 and I-25. Whether you're parked for the season or just passing through, there's a lot worth seeing within an easy drive.

And if something on the rig needs attention while you're here, Fun Country RV & Marine, 8800 South Desert Blvd., Anthony, TX 79821, is right on I-10 between the two cities. Call 915-886-3500 for RV service and parts.

Why Snowbirds Like the Borderland

The Borderland gets lots of sunshine, daytime temperatures that are usually comfortable in winter, and easy access to two major interstates. I-10 runs east–west through El Paso and Las Cruces, and I-25 heads north from Las Cruces toward Truth or Consequences and Albuquerque. That makes the area a good base for day trips or a stopover between Arizona and the rest of Texas.

Stops Around El Paso

  • Franklin Mountains State Park: one of the largest urban parks in the country, with hiking and scenic drives right in El Paso.
  • Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site: east of El Paso, known for rock climbing, rock art, and camping. Reservations are usually needed, so check with Texas Parks & Wildlife before you go.
  • Downtown El Paso and the Mission Trail: historic missions in Ysleta and Socorro, plus local food that's worth the trip on its own.

Stops Around Las Cruces

  • Old Mesilla: a historic plaza with shops, restaurants, and the Basilica of San Albino.
  • Organ Mountains–Desert Peaks National Monument: rugged peaks just east of town, with trails at the Dripping Springs area.
  • Leasburg Dam State Park: a small state park north of Las Cruces along the Rio Grande, with camping.

Worth the Drive

  • White Sands National Park: the white gypsum dunes near Alamogordo are a classic day trip from Las Cruces. Check for occasional road closures due to missile range testing on US-70.
  • Elephant Butte Lake State Park: New Mexico's largest lake, north on I-25, popular with RVers for its camping and wide views.

Campground rules, fees, and availability change, so always check with the park or campground directly before you roll in.

Route Tips for Big Rigs

  • Watch the wind. Strong crosswinds and blowing dust can hit I-10 in this area, especially in late winter and spring. High-profile rigs should check the forecast and road conditions.
  • Fuel up before long gaps. Stretches of I-10 east of El Paso have long distances between services.
  • Check tires and brakes before mountain grades and long desert runs.
  • Keep a parts plan. Write down the part numbers for your water pump, A/C, and water heater so a fix on the road goes faster.
