Because of the freedom provided by RVing, you can choose to go anywhere and do whatever you like for as long as you like without worrying about hotel accommodations or staying with friends. Planning for such a trip can be daunting, though, with all the factors you have to take into consideration, from stocking up your RV to reserving campsites to staying within a budget. Here are our tips on how to successfully plan your next RV trip.

Make Arrangements In Advance

As soon as you and your traveling companions have chosen your dates and destination, or multiple destinations if you’re going on a longer trip, you should book your campsites. Spots fill up quickly during the summer months, so knowing and scheduling as far in advance as you can is important if you want a good place.

Once you have these settled, you can start to plan the route to take there. Look up traffic conditions to see if there’s any construction you’ll want to avoid or steep inclines that will be harder to scale in an RV. You can look for scenic routes if you want a prettier drive, or you can try to find the most direct path that will conserve gas.

Stock Up On Supplies

You should ensure that your RV is well-stocked with all the essentials you’ll need. This means checking and updating safety supplies such as fire extinguishers and first aid kits, as well as the things you keep on board at all times like blankets and bed linens, towels, bathroom and hygiene essentials, kitchen supplies like dishes and cooking pans, cleaning tools and entertainment options.

Have everyone write their own packing list including hygiene needs, devices, hobby or sport equipment and clothing for all weather conditions. You’ll want to have some food on board, but you can always stock up at a grocery store closer to your destination and replenish while you’re there. To save some time, you can even cook at home and prepare meals in advance to have ready in your RV’s freezer.

Keep To a Budget

Sticking to a budget will enhance the economy inherent to RVing. You want to have the fees for all campsites, money allocated to attraction admissions, fuel and food budgets, plus spending money for everyone to use at their discretion for souvenirs and shopping along the way. Make sure you have an emergency fund for repairs or health issues that could arise so you’re not caught unprepared.
